How to Remove Press-On Nails Safely (Without Damaging Your Natural Nails)

One of the best things about press-on nails is the freedom to change your look whenever you like. But the way you take them off matters just as much as the way you put them on. Pull them off in a hurry and you risk peeling layers of your natural nail. Remove them gently and your nails stay healthy, and your favourite Le Papillons set can be worn again.

Here's our step-by-step guide to removing press-on nails the safe way.

What You'll Need

  • A bowl of warm water
  • A few drops of gentle hand soap or dish soap
  • Cuticle oil (or any light oil, like olive or almond oil)
  • An orange-wood stick or cuticle pusher
  • A soft nail buffer
  • Optional: acetone-based remover (for nails applied with glue that won't budge)

Step 1: Soak in Warm, Soapy Water

Fill a bowl with warm (not hot) water and add a few drops of soap. Soak your fingertips for 10–15 minutes. The warmth softens both adhesive tabs and nail glue, so the press-ons start to loosen on their own.

Step 2: Add Cuticle Oil

After soaking, apply cuticle oil around the edges of each nail and let it sit for a minute. The oil seeps under the press-on and breaks down the bond even further, while keeping your cuticles hydrated.

Step 3: Gently Lift From the Sides

Use an orange-wood stick or cuticle pusher to gently lift the press-on from the sides, not straight up from the tip. Work slowly, rocking the stick from side to side. If you feel any resistance or pulling, stop and soak for another 5 minutes.

Golden rule: never force, pry, or rip a press-on nail off. If it doesn't come away easily, it simply needs more time.

Step 4: Removing Stubborn Glue (If Needed)

If you used nail glue and the nails are still firmly attached, soak your fingertips in acetone-based remover for 5–10 minutes. Keep in mind that acetone can dull or damage the design, so only use it if you don't plan to reuse that set. Wrap each finger in a cotton pad soaked in remover and foil to limit how much of the press-on is exposed.

Step 5: Clean Up Your Natural Nails

Once all the nails are off, you may see a little leftover adhesive. Gently buff it away with a soft buffer, then wash your hands. Finish with cuticle oil and a rich hand cream to restore moisture.

How to Save Your Press-Ons to Reuse

Every Le Papillons set is hand-painted, so with a little care you can wear it again and again:

  • Peel or gently buff any remaining glue or tab residue off the underside of each nail.
  • Wipe them clean with a soft cloth and let them dry completely.
  • Store them in their original box, in order by size, so they're ready for your next occasion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Peeling them off dry. This is the number one cause of thin, weak natural nails.
  • Biting or picking at the edges. It lifts layers of your nail plate along with the press-on.
  • Using metal tools to pry. They can scratch and dent your nail surface.
  • Skipping aftercare. A few seconds of cuticle oil keeps your nails strong for your next set.

How Long Should You Wear Press-On Nails?

With adhesive tabs, most sets last 1–3 days, which is perfect for an event or weekend. With nail glue, they can last up to 2 weeks. We recommend giving your natural nails a short break of a day or two between applications to keep them healthy.
